Convert your Powerpoint presentation to Flash Video

Windows only: Freeware PowerPoint plug-in iSpring converts your
PowerPoint presentation to an interactive Flash video with the click of
a button. Not only is iSpring a great way to make your PowerPoint
presentation more portable (not everyone has PowerPoint, after all),
but as Digital Inspiration points out, an exported movie even preserves
all of your slide transitions, animations, and hyperlinks. iSpring is
freeware, Windows only, works with PowerPoint 2000 through 2007.
Alternately, you can upload any presentation directly to the SlideBoom
web site (which appears to convert and host Flash movies made with
iSpring) if you don't want to host the presentation yourself.

When is Manual Focus Better than Auto Focus?

Manual-FocusingModern day Digital Cameras present photographers with an ever increasing array of Automatic and Semi Automatic shooting modes. Most of these center around different ways of exposing your shots - however many cameras also give options for different focusing modes (eg - auto, continuous focusing for moving subjects, single point focusing, multiple point focusing, face recognition focusing and manual).

It’s no wonder then that many photographers never make use of their camera and lens’ ability to focus manually.

Here are the scenarios where Manual focus might be of help to you:

  1. Macro Pictures
  2. Portrait Pictures
  3. Shooting through Glass or wire fences
  4. Action Pictures
  5. Low Light Pictures

Rocky & Terminator to star in Bollywood movie

There’s an interesting article online that talks about a Bollywood film that will be made for the first time at Universal Studios Hollywood. It’s going to be a huge production, the biggest of its kind in Bollywood history.

Now normally that wouldn’t be such a big deal, but this one features an interesting catch. It will feature “the Oak” himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger alongside Sly Stallone. That’s right, you read it correctly. The Govenater and Rocky Balboa. According to the story the movie will be about an Indian stuntman who takes Hollywood by storm but cannot find true love there. The two will appear alongside the Bollywood stars Ashkay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor in Incredible Love.

The article goes onto to confirm:

Sajid Nadiadwala, the producer, said his success in landing Stallone and Schwarzenegger reflected the growing power of the Indian film market and Bollywood’s increasing cooperation with Hollywood studios that are keen to cut costs.

Shiptool Finds the Cheapest Shipping Rates

Find the cheapest way to send a package with web application Shiptool. After providing the site with your shipping and destination addresses and package type, Shiptool scours UPS, FedEx, USPS, and DHL, and returns all of your shipping options sorted by price to help you find the cheapest solution to fit your needs. The biggest thing missing from Shiptool is a column displaying delivery estimates, though some service types do explicitly state their delivery turnover (e.g., UPS 3 Day Select). Shiptool also does package tracking, but with all the great package tracking tools already out there, the shipping rates feature is what sets it apart.

Enhance your pictures with HDR

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a method where you can combine pictures taken at different exposures and combine that to one picture to bring all the dynamic ranges in the picture.

If you have ever photographed a high contrast scene, you know that even the best exposure will typically have blown out highlights and flat shadows. Photomatix offers two ways to solve this problem:
Exposure Blending: Merge differently exposed photographs into one image with increased dynamic range.
Tone Mapping: Reveal highlight and shadow details in an HDR image created from multiple exposures. The tone mapped image is ready for printing while showing the complete dynamic range captured.

13 ways to use LinkedIn

Screenshot_1.pngUntil now, I used to marvel in the number of connections I added to my linkedIn. It used to be my status symbol. However, follow this link to get more out of LinkedIn.

Most people use LinkedIn to “get to someone” in order to make a sale, form a partnership, or get a job. It works well for this because it is an online network of more than 8.5 million experienced professionals from around the world representing 130 industries. Taco bell meal cost $200

Taco Bell Corp.Image via Wikipedia

Recently, I was in a mood for Taco Bell. Made a u-turn at a traffic light (on left-only signal) and got a ticket. I argued with the officer that he should know the rules and that I made a perfectly legal turn. That argument later turned into a plea to let me off with a warning.

The officer didn't yield and gave me a $75 ticket with an option for $30 Safety Driving class. I decided to contest that and so I plead not-guilty.

The hearing happened recently. I went to the court, hoping that the officer would not show-up (in Illinois, if the officer doesn't show up you win the case). But to my disappointment, he was there . The officer was winning all cases that day. After an hour or so, it was my turn and when I plead not-guilty, the officer was called. We both swore to tell the truth. The officer repeated what happened that day (I'm amazed by their memory, he even mentioned Taco Bell, maybe they record minute details when they issue a ticket). Judge asked me to make my counter-argument and I said:
"Your honor, I made a u-turn on left-only light"

[I heard few chuckles in the court].

The prosecutor ridiculed me by asking if I got the rule book and if so, If I read it. Judge reduced my fine (due to my lack of awareness). Long story short, my fine amount was: $185 (apparently they increased the fees for anyone who contests and appears in court).

Itemized bill:
Court fee:$185
Taco Bell meal:$6
Gas cost (to commute to court):$9+
Total:$200+

Surf the internet anonymously with Vidalia

Vidalia screenshotDescription: Vidalia is a GUI for Tor, the free onion-router implementation that can provide anonymous internet communication. This program resides in the system tray and provides quick, 1-click anonymous internet access. It allows you to start and stop Tor, view it’s status and bandwidth usage, and even setup your own Tor server if you want that can contribute to the anonymous network.

If you’re not familiar with Tor, it is an “onion router” program that can provide some degree of internet anonymity through a worldwide network of interconnected servers that employ the technology (the “onion” metaphor refers to the use of a set of encrypted layers to get the anonymity). What Vidalia does is (a) make it really easy to use Tor straight from your system tray, and (b) install all the tools that you need to get anonymous internet access in one or two clicks (Tor, Privoxy, and TorButton for Firefox).

White House Home Theatre

Architectural Digest has a couple pictures up of the Presidential movie theater inside the White House. The full on red theme came about in a 2004 redesign. It's a bit over the top for my tastes, but we have to show the foreign dignitaries we mean business when it comes to home theater setups.

Dude, what's the most happening place in the city?

citysense-small.png

What if you could look at your cell phone and see a heat map of where everybody in the city was at that very moment? The more people at any given location, the redder it would appear on the map. That’s what Citysense does. It is a mobile application that is supposed to help you figure out where the hottest clubs and night spots are so you can go there (or avoid them, depending on your preference).

It senses where the most popular places are based on the location information emitted by everyone’s cell phones, shows the places with the most activity, and then links into Yelp or Google to help you find out what is at that location. Over time, it learns about where you like to go (fancy restaurants or punk rock clubs) and shows you other people like you, and where they are—right now. And it does all of this anonymously. (You can’t see your where your actual friends are). Citysense only works in San Francisco right now. It is available as a mobile download for the Blackberry and soon for the iPhone as well.

The application is essentially a demonstration for a startup called Sense Networks that is emerging from stealth mode today. Citysense is built on top of the company’s main technology platform, Macrosense. The company ingests billions of data points about people’s location from cell phones, GPS devices, WiFi, and even taxis. The company also collects geo-location data from everyone who downloads Citysense, or any future app (although, the company considers the data to be yours, and you can delete it from the database at any time).

Pretty cool..

Eat cheese before you ask your boss for raise / promotion

Alamy: Tryptophan is present in several foods and
cheese is a particularly good source

It may look like an ordinary cheese sandwich – but it could contain the vital ingredient that helps you successfully negotiate that pay rise.
Scientists have found that people with high levels of the brain chemical serotonin are more likely to succeed in delicate negotiations affecting their own interests. Serotonin is manufactured in the body from the amino acid, tryptophan, which is present in several foods – and cheese is a particularly good source.

Eating a cheese sandwich before entering the boss's office could therefore give your brain that vital edge.

Psychologists at the University of Cambridge who manipulated the diets of volunteers to alter their serotonin levels found that when the levels of the brain chemical were low the volunteers were more likely to allow emotion to rule their heads and make decisions that harmed their long-term interests.
